National Orthopaedic Hospital was established in the year 1974 as the Haile Selasie Institute of Ophthalmic, Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery by the then East Central State Administrator Ukpabi Asika, located directly opposite Abakpa junction. The hospital was changed from Haile Selasie Institute to National Orthopaedic Hospital by the Federal military government of Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, while the Ophthalmic Section was transferred to Kaduna.
The institution has been a training centre. It runs two Post Basic Programmes: Orthopaedic/Burns & Plastic Programme together with Orientation programme for the Basic Nursing Schools within the South East Zone.
The idea of establishing a College of Nursing Science was conceived by the present Medical Director Prof. Emmanuel C. Iyidiobi in collaboration with the NOHE Board Members who saw the need of training qualified nurses to meet up with the global need of trained nurses in other to increase manpower worldwide.
More so, the exit of nurses for greener pastures has created a negative impact in our health institution in Nigeria and NOHE is not excluded.
The plan started in 2022, and here we are today with much progress in structure, equipment, material and manpower.
We pray by His grace, the College will soon kick off pending the approval from the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
Presently, the College is being headed by DDNE Aguzie Eucharia Udodirim as the pioneer Provost of the College.
